About applying for refund of motor vehicle licence fees

If your motor vehicle has been stolen, deregistered or declared permanently unfit for use, you can apply for a refund of a motor vehicle licence fee.

Your application for a refund must be made to the province where your motor vehicle was registered. This must be done within three months after the date of notification of the theft or of your vehicle’s deregistration. Your refund will be calculated at one twelfth of the motor vehicle licence fees paid for your motor vehicle for every month for which the vehicle licence remains valid.

An amount of less than R100 shall not be refunded.

What you should do

  1. Go to the provincial administration where your vehicle is registered. Take along the following:
    • your identity document
    • an affidavit confirming that the vehicle has been stolen, is permanently unfit for use or has a deregistration certificate.
  2. Complete the Application for Refund of Licence Fees (RLF) Form.

How long does it take

The application is processed on the same day, but the refund is only paid out after a few days due to internal auditing processes.

How much does it cost

The service is free.
