About import exemption certificate for liquor

You must apply for an import certificate for liquor if you want to import more than 12 litres of liquor for own use. The minimum amount you can import annually are 180 litres.

You do not have to apply for this certificate if the alcohol you want to import:

  • has an alcohol content of more than one percent, forms part of your luggage and is for personal drinking
  • does not exceed 12 litres in volume.

You are not allowed to use this certificate to sell or distribute liquor.

Reason for application for exemption: Diplomatic use:

  1. Moving House 
  2. Bona Fide Trade Sample 
  3. Free Gift 
  4. For Private Consumption 
  5. Scientific purpose     
  6. National or international events 

What you should do

You must download the Application for an import exemption form, under Forms to complete and fill it in. You do not attach anything on the form, and you will not be required to give samples of the liquor you want to import.

2. Additional documents required:

  • Copy of Identification document / passport of applicant
  • letter of authority if the applicant is acting on behalf of the importer

3. When you get to the port of entry, you must give it to the inspector from the Department of Agriculture or alternatively, e-mail it to jeswaynen@dalrrd.gov.za (link sends e-mail) before going to the port of entry.

How long does it take

You will receive the certificate within 48 hours the same day.
