If you want to own a firearm, you must undergo the training at an accredited institution and obtain a training proficiency certificate.
Once you have obtained the competency certificate, you can apply for the firearm licence at your nearest police station. You need a licence for every firearm that you possess.
A list of accredited training institutions is maintained on the South African Police Service (SAPS) website.
Renew your firearm licence
You must renew your firearm licence at least 90 days before the expiry date. The validity of the licence varies between two and ten years depending on the type of licence.
