About registering a stock remedy

To import, manufacture, produce, or sell stock remedy in South Africa, you must register with the Registrar of Act 36 of 1947.

Stock remedies are used with domestic animals, livestock, poultry, fish, or wild animals to:

  • prevent, treat and cure unhealthy conditions.
  • maintain, grow, produce and improve their health

You can only apply for registration if your company is registered in South Africa or you are a legal body registered in South Africa.

You must have the following requirements:

  • Scientific data showing that the stock remedy you want to register has been tried and tested and that it works. If you want to register different stock remedies, you must have scientific data for each remedy. The scientific data must explain the safety, quality, the effectiveness of the remedy and any possible impact on trade resulting from use of the stock remedy in food producing animals (e.g maximum residue limits (MRL). The data must be signed by an accredited laboratory.
  • A covering letter with your company’s letter head defining the remedy you want to register.
  • Proposed labels (if applicable).
