The repealed Telecommunications Act 103 of 1996 intended:

  • to make new provision for the regulation of telecommunication activities other than broadcasting, and for the control of the radio frequency spectrum; and for that purpose to establish an independent South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and a Universal Service Agency;
  • to repeal
    • the Radio Act, 1952, and
    • the Radio Amendment Acts of 1957, 1962, 1963, 1969 and 1974 and
  • to amend
  • to provide for matters connected therewith.

Commencement

  • 1 July 1997, remainder of Act (Gazette 18074 of 13 June 1997)
  • 21 February 1997, Sections 30(3)(a) and 30(3)(c)
  • 15 November 1996 (Gazette 17578 of 15 November 1996)
