The repealed Telecommunications Act 103 of 1996 intended:
- to make new provision for the regulation of telecommunication activities other than broadcasting, and for the control of the radio frequency spectrum; and for that purpose to establish an independent South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and a Universal Service Agency;
- to repeal
- the Radio Act, 1952, and
- the Radio Amendment Acts of 1957, 1962, 1963, 1969 and 1974 and
- to amend
- the General Law Amendment Acts of 1957 and 1975,
- the Post Office Act, 1958,
- the Post Office Service Act, 1974 [repealed in 1998],
- the Broadcasting Act, 1976, [repealed in 1999]
- the Legal Succession to the South African Transport Services Act, 1989, and
- the Independent Broadcasting Authority Act, 1993 [repealed in 2006]; and
- to provide for matters connected therewith.
