Electoral Commission on results of municipal by-elections held on 30 November 2022

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and  KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained the seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

The ANC also won a seat previously won by an independent. The ANC retained three seats, while the DA and IFP retained two seats each.

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Elsie Ntombizodwa Marawu, in ward 33, Enoch Mgijima Municipality- EC139, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 54,88% of the total votes cast compared to 37,60% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 62,63%

  • Mzwakhe Archibald Thembela, in ward 20, Mhlontlo Municipality – EC156, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 69,56% of the total votes cast compared to 52,11% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 37,98%.

  • Hlelizwe Happyboy Mhlongo, in ward 11, Maphumulo Municipality- KZN294, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 60,81% of the total votes cast compared to 47,99% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58,32%.

  • Fanyana Alfred Motloung, in ward 04, Merafong City– GT484, Gauteng. The party won the seat previously won by an independent in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 61,81% of the total votes cast compared to 57,42% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 41,73%

     

     

The new DA councillors are:

  • Devin Charles Nieuwenhuyzen, in ward 22, Mogale City Municipality – GT481, Gauteng. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 74,48% of the total votes cast compared to 75,61% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 23,69%.

  • Alan Theodore Cutten, in ward 10, uMdoni Municipality – KZN212, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 82,27% of the total votes cast compared to 84,55% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 38,59%.

The new IFP councillors are:

  • Musawenkosi Jacob Ndebele, in ward 11, uMsinga Municipality – KZN244, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 56,56% of the total votes cast compared to 59,53% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 60,89%.

  • Siyabonga Praisegod Ndaba, in ward 13, AbaQulusi Municipality – KZN263, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 64,76% of the total votes cast compared to 49,48% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46,92%.

The results of ward 5, Mthonjaneni Municipality, in KwaZulu-Natal, are still pending.
