Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Campaign 2015

The first round of the HPV vaccination campaign is from 23 February to 20 March 2015.

The campaign is conducted by the Department of Health to protect young girls from getting cervical cancer caused by the human papillomavirus. All girls in grade four who are 9 years and older will be vaccinated, provided that their parents have signed the consent forms. An estimated number of 500 000 girls in 18 000 public schools will be vaccinated.

The HPV vaccine:

  • prevents cervical cancer
  • is most effective if given at a young age (9 years and older)
  • is safe and effective
  • has been used in many countries
  • requires 2 doses (6 months apart)
  • is recommended by the World Health Organisation for girls before they are exposed to HPV
  • introduction presents an opportunity for South Africa to provide long term health benefits.
