Environmental Affairs leads World Oceans Day celebrations in Port Elizabeth, 8 Jun

The Department of Environmental Affairs will join the global community to celebrate the annual World Oceans Day in Port Elizabeth on 8 June 2019.

In partnership with the Eastern Cape provincial Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs (DEDEA), the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM), the Nelson Mandela University, the Benguela Current Convention (BCC) and a number of local NGOs, the department will conduct a beach clean-up and an awareness campaign focusing on historically disadvantaged communities and schools around the Metro.

As part of the day’s activities, DEA will also host learners from schools in and around the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The department and its partners will expose learners to information about oceans, marine pollution and careers in the marine sector.

World Oceans Day is a reminder of the pivotal role oceans play in regulating the earth’s ecosystems and the threats oceans face.

The 2019 international theme is: Gender and the Oceans and strives to build greater ocean and gender literacy and discover possible ways to promote gender equality in ocean-related activities such as marine scientific research, fisheries, labour at sea, migration by sea and human trafficking, policy-making and management.
