The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, has granted a 30-day extension for public comment on proposed regulations regarding extended producer responsibility with regard to the management of waste post the consumer stage of a product’s life cycle.

The extension for comment on the Consultation was published in Government Gazette 43556 (Notice No. 817) on 28 July 2020.

Overnight accommodation for hunting to be permitted in terms of amended lockdown regulations

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, has clarified that overnight accommodation for hunters will be permitted in terms of further amendments to be made to the Directions for the Biodiversity Sector for Alert Level 3.

“Permitting hunters to sleep over at their hunting destinations, within the province in which they live, is in line with this week’s Cabinet decision to ease restrictions around leisure travel,” said the Minister.

The deployment of a team of Working on Fire firefighters and management to fight the New England Road Landfill Site fire in Pietermaritzburg has been welcomed by the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy.

“The team of firefighters and management have been working tirelessly since their deployment on 21 July to support the Mgungundlovu Disaster Management Centre to extinguish the fire that flared up again last week,” said the Minister. “Their efforts and commitment at this difficult time are to be commended.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerability of small-scale fishing communities. Since the lockdown began, these communities have faced many challenges, from the initial restrictions on being able to fish to the inability to access markets for their catch.

For the past eight years, the WWF marine team has been working closely with small-scale fishers in Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond to ensure that they and the rich marine environment on their doorsteps thrive.
