Advice to South Africans in the event of arrest abroad

South Africans who are arrested or jailed abroad may request the authorities to allow them to contact the South African representative in that country. Alternatively, somebody can contact the South African representative in that country or the Chief Directorate Consular Services of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in Pretoria on their behalf.

Consular officers will help ensure that South African citizens arrested abroad are treated humanely while incarcerated. They will visit the arrested citizen, provide information about the legal system of the country and contact family or friends, if requested in writing.
