Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries leads World Environment day in Pretoria

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Barbara Creecy will lead community clean-up activities to mark World Environment Day in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, on Wednesday 5 June 2019.

This year’s World Environment Day will be celebrated under the theme “Beat Air Pollution”. The theme is been informed by reports that approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in the Asia-Pacific region.  Research has shown that 92% of people worldwide do not breathe clean air with air pollution costing the global economy $5 trillion every year in welfare costs.

Waste is also one of the many contributors to air pollution. The toxic substances in air contaminated by waste include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. Clean-up activities are some of the efforts geared towards an improved air quality and attainment of everyone’s Constitutional right to an environment that is clean and not harmful to the health and wellbeing of the people of South Africa.

Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment Dr Kgosientsho Sputla Ramokgopa will join the Minister during the clean-up activities as guided by the Good Green Deeds Programme that was launched by the President in March 2019.
