Premier Senzo Mchunu urges KwaZulu-Natal residents to register for 2014 elections

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu applies for smart ID card in Durban

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has called on the people of KwaZulu-Natal to register to vote during the voter registration period scheduled to take place this weekend. He was speaking today at the Offices of the Home Affairs Department in Durban where he applied for the new Smart card Identity.

“I wish to register my appreciation to the staff at Home Affairs Department for efficiency in handling applications from the members of the public. Importantly, we have noted improvements in the rendering of service by department. Although there are hiccups here and there but it is encouraging to see the smiles in the faces of the staff as they interact with members of the public.”

“The introduction of Smart Card IDs should be celebrated as it is an indication of determination by government to use technology to strengthen service delivery.”

“Importantly, since we attained democracy, the department has played an important role in ensuring that we hold smooth elections. Section 19 subsection (3) paragraph (a) of the 1996 Constitution of the Republic of South Africa states every adult citizen has the right to vote in elections for any legislative body established in terms of the Constitution and to do so in secret.”

“I therefore encourage the people of KwaZulu-Natal to remember that they have a responsibility to play a role in electing the party of their choice. Over the years we have seen an increase in the number of people that participate in the national and local government elections from this province. This is a clear demonstration that the people from this province are determined to protect the freedom that was ushered in in 1994.”
