Youth Agency congratulates Prof. Thabo Msibi on his appointment as the Dean and Head: School of Education at University of KwaZulu-Natal

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) welcomes the announcement by the University of KwaZulu Natal to appoint Professor Thabo Msibi as the Dean and Head for School of Education (SoE).   

Prof.  Msibi, aged 34, holds the following qualifications: A Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Education honours (completed summa cum laude), both from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Master of Education from Teachers College: Columbia University, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has an extensive research record in highly reputable scholarly platforms. Part of his responsibilities include serving on the editorial boards of five international and local journals such as   Gender and Education, Journal of LGBT Youth, Gender and Language, Perspectives in Education and Transformation in Higher Education.

Recognisable in his achievements is a sterling record of student leadership. Later in his professional life receiving the University’s Distinguished Teachers Awards for being a prolific researcher. He has also supervised and graduated numerous postgraduate students. A recipient of the DVC’s Community Service Award in 2015, also serves as Member of the Ministerial Committee appointed by Minister Angie Motshegoa, which investigates discrimination at schools. He also serves in the Board of the Durban LGBTI Community and Health Centre.

NYDA Executive Chairperson, Mr Sifiso Mtsweni says that “The NYDA welcomes and congratulates Professor Thabo Msibi on his appointment. His journey tells a tale of a youth committed to academia and transformation of society through social cohesion and nation building”.

We support the call made by the Department of Higher Education to set up a Ministerial Task Team to investigate an anomaly that 23 years into democracy, 83% of all university professors are white which stood at 66% in 2015.  The appointment of Prof. Msibi guarantees the future of our higher education institutions. It further opens up dialogue about our education system and its throughput as we consider access to higher education critical for youth development” said Mtsweni.
