Western Cape Economic Development and Tourism hosts digital disruption think tank, 1 Oct

DEDAT to host digital disruption think tank

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), will on Monday 1 October 2018, host a skills incentives think tank (SITT) in partnership with Old Mutual.

The networking session, themed “Digital Disruption in the Making” will focus on issues related to the digital economy and its skills requirements.

The event will offer a platform for discussion on improving access to skills funds under the auspices of Project Khulisa and the Apprenticeship Game Changer.

The SITT forum is expected to include public and private sector companies, educational institutions, skills and corporate social investment agencies, youth and skills organisations, municipalities, relevant Western Cape SETA cluster members and industry associates.

Digital disruption can create economic growth through:

  • Reduced transaction costs, allowing businesses to enhance efficiencies and exploit economies of scale (particularly if data-intensive transactions are automated);
  • Increased innovation;
  • Reduced information failures, search costs and the costs to communicate;
  • Increased labour productivity;
  • Increased exports and development of new markets; and
  • Greater business efficiencies.

MEC of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde said: “Technology and digital disruption are not even the way of the future, they are what businesses should be doing right now in order to stay competitive and grow. One of our key tasks as the Western Cape government is to ensure that there is an enabling environment for businesses to function. This includes the promotion of a skilled workforce in support of our priority economic sectors.”

Members of the media are invited to attend the event.
