Free State water levels is standing at 92.2% capacity

The Free State Province has a satisfying water level capacity of 92.2 % this week, a much-anticipated change from last year’s 74.6% at the same time.

Dams and rivers are on positive levels lately as a result of showers of rain in most areas of the Free State. This is according to the Department of Water and Sanitation water supply system.

Rustfontein dam at Modder River supplies Bloemfontein area and it is at 74.3% capacity compared to last year’s 24.7%. This is much relief to both community and farmers.

Groothoek Dam at Kgabanyane River, also supplying Bloemfontein is standing at 96.9%, a great improvement from last year’s 43.6%. Welbedacht Dam at Caledon River is at 100.0% full, just over 4.1% increase from last year at the same time.

Knellpoort Dam that supplies Mangaung and is also a feeder to Rietspruit Dam is standing at 76.3%, an improvement of 20.4% when it is compared to its level last year at this time.

Krugersdrift Dam at Modder River is at 100.8 % as compared to 99.7% last year at this time. Vanderkloof Dam, the pride of Free State with the longest dam wall is currently at 94.2%. A greater improvement from last week’s 79.2%.

Another pride of the Free State heritage and the biggest in the southern hemisphere is Gariep Dam situated at Orange River. It is standing at 98.7%, a difference of 11.1% from last year’s 87.6%% capacity.

Fika Patso Dam is currently at its 100% full capacity. This is a great improvement as it is compared to last year’s 35.5%. The Tierpoort dam, which is supplying water for agricultural purposes, is currently standing at 97.6%, which is a huge improvement from where it was last year at the same time, 34.5%.

Despite these satisfying water levels in the province, the Department of Water and Sanitation still calls on water consumers in the province to continue using water sparingly as water remains a scarce resource. Our resources are still under pressure and the residents need to adhere to water restrictions in place set by respective Municipalities in the Province and the country as a whole.
