Deputy Minister Candith Mashego-Dlamini addresses symposium on South Africa’s Chairing of the African Union, 13 Mar

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Candith Mashego-Dlamini, will on Friday, 13 March 2020, address a symposium on South Africa’s Chairing of the African Union (AU) at the University of Venda, Limpopo Province. The symposium will focus on South Africa’s priorities as chair of the African Union.

In February 2020, South Africa assumed the Chairship of the AU, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSG).

Holding these positions means that as a country, South Africa will strive to make a contribution towards building strong, sustainable and resilient regional and continental mechanisms that are able to support the national efforts to deliver durable and inclusive economic opportunities for the people, in particular women and youth.

The aim of the symposium is to contextualise South Africa’s Chairship of the AU, stimulate debates on international obligations and national domestic priorities and to give participants a platform to interact with the Deputy Minister regarding matters of international engagements between the country and the world at large .

South Africa’s future remains inextricably linked to the future of the African continent and that of its neighbours in Southern Africa. As the Chair of the APRM, South Africa will be primarily responsible for driving the APRM’s good governance agenda.

South Africa has consistently called for full compliance with the norms and instruments of the AU in support of democracy and good governance as articulated in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
