Special Investigating Unit on tackling corruption

"If we are to turn the wheels of corruption in government, state owned entities and by extension, corporate sector to a bind, the SIU and other corruption/crime busting agencies in the criminal justice system have to work collaboratively, professionally and with speed. The proceeds of corruption in the hands of corrupt people whether in the employ of government, state owned entities and again by extension, business dissipates swiftly through various scrupulous money washing schemes", says Adv Andy Mothibi, Head: SIU.

Adv Andy Mothibi attributes SIU's success in setting aside a number of contracts which were entered into irregularly by different government entities all be it different departments or state owned entities, to the new implementing SIU strategy which, without compromising quality of any investigations, to a prompt swift turnaround action time.

On 11 May 2018, we managed to set aside an irregularly entered into contract between SABC and Lornavision (PTY) Ltd to the value of almost R62 733 556.61 said Mothibi.  A claim for damages suffered as a consequence of this irregular contract against the propagators of it, namely Lornavision (PTY) Ltd and Mr James Aguma, SABC's former Acting CEO is currently underway.

Just this past Friday 9 November 2018 at the South Gauteng High Court, Mothibi said 'We set aside yet another contract to the value of approximately R52 million which the SABC entered into irregularly with Vision View Production CC. (Case number: 18/1587).'

In all these matters we litigate on, where we discover that some criminal act has been committed we refer these cases to the NPA for possible prosecution where possible. Corruption on its own is a criminal activity. Society demands a South Africa free from corruption and by implication those found wanting, should be locked up in the Department of Correctional Services Centres (Prisons).

Mothibi implored all SIU officials to work diligently without fear or favour in rooting out corruption whenever and wherever it rears out its ugly head.
