School of Government hosts trainers and human resource development officials to discuss improving functioning of the state, 29 Mar

The National School of Government (The NSG) will host the 21st Public Sector Trainers Forum in Sandton on the 29th of March 2021, as part of improving the capacity of the state to deliver services that improve the quality of life.

The Forum, which is supported by the European Union, will bring together trainers and human resource development (HRD) practitioners in the national, provincial and local government spheres to share their experiences. The goal is to improve the capacity and functioning of the state and to build a caring, citizen-centred and professional public sector.

“The post-COVID-19 service delivery pressures require innovation, problem solving, responsiveness and high levels of motivation among public sector officials. Public sector HRD and training practitioners carry the responsibility to identify and facilitate the acquisition of skills in pursuit of the broader strategic objective of building a capable, ethical and development-oriented public service. This conference will thus provide an opportunity for them to share experiences and ideas with a view to improving the way government works and how services are delivered to the public. This is more critical now given the manner in which the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated that we change the way we work which requires innovation and creativity within the public sector,” said the NSG Principal, Busani Ngcaweni.

The one-day conference will discuss matters including the current Ministerial initiative to professionalise the public sector to improve the way government works and delivers services. The conference will ponder the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the public service in particular leveraging technology within the context of the COVID -19 pandemic as well as the emerging “working from home” phenomenon through a Virtual Working MasterClass.

The MasterClass will begin at 14:00 and will feature two key presentations. Ms Tanya Cohen, the co-ordinator of Public Private Growth initiative (PPGI), will speak on the topic: A look at working from home through the lens of the ILO decent work framework, from rights at work, to skills and productivity, social protection and social dialogue. The second presenter, Ms Poppy Tshabalala, the Vice Principal of ICT and Chief Information Officer at the University of South Africa, will speak on the Topic: Leveraging technology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the digital divide: role of HRD practitioners.

The NSG Principal Mr Ngcaweni will brief the HRD practitioners on the repositioning of the NSG in the context of the broader public sector professionalisation agenda.

Delegates have the option of joining in person at the conference venue or virtually. Only delegates that have received confirmation that a seat has been reserved for them will be allowed entry on the day of the conference venue.
