SA Agulhas II to depart for Marion Island
The Department of Environmental Affairs’ SA Agulhas II will be embarking on her fourth logistical and scientific voyage to Marion Island on Thursday 7 April 2016.
Aboard the ship will be the Marion 73 expedition team, as well as a host of researchers and scientists from DEA and tertiary institutions who will be doing research in the ocean and on the island. Marion Island is a volcanic island that forms part of South African territory and was proclaimed as a Special Nature Reserve Status in 1995.
The Marion 73 expedition team will be the fifth of its kind to inhabit the new base since its commission in March 2011 and will occupy it for a period of 14 months. This year, also marks 50 Years of Research and Adventure on South Africa’s Sub-Antarctic Island.
Members of the media are invited to cover the farewell ceremony, and will have an opportunity for photos and interviews.
