The African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party all retained their wards in the nine by-elections contested in five provinces yesterday.
Voter turnout varied between 26.36% and 53.56% with an average of 38.93%. Two wards were uncontested.
The new councillors for the African National Congress are:
- Free State: Khehla Antony Sibeko in Ward 4 in the Phumelela [Vrede] Municipality – FS195. The ward was uncontested so no voting took place. The seat was retained by the party.
- Free State: Sanna Mthimkhulu in Ward 1 in the Ngwathe [Parys] Municipality – FS203. The seat was retained by the party with 55.05% of the 2 841 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.43%.
- KwaZulu-Natal: Wiseman Mncedisi Khumalo in Ward 10 in the Ingwe [Creighton] Municipality – KZN431. The seat was retained by the party with 94.30% of the 4 402 votes cast. Voter turnout was 36.67%.
- North West: Nnuki Robert Tseke in Ward 28 in the Moretele [Makapanstad] Municipality – NW371. The ward was uncontested so no voting took place. The seat was retained by the party.
The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are:
- Eastern Cape: Glenda Christina Mackelina in Ward 5 in the Camdeboo [Graaff-Reinet] Municipality – EC101. The seat was retained by the party with 59.17% of the 2 904 votes cast. Voter turnout was 47.14%.
- Gauteng: Phillip Andries Nel in Ward 42 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] – TSH. The seat was retained by the party with 96.38% of the 13 673 votes cast. Voter turnout was 33.99%.
- North West: Cheryl Phillips in Ward 16 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality – NW373. The seat was retained by the party with 89.39% of the 5 955 votes cast. Voter turnout was 26.36%.
The new councillors for the Inkatha Freedom Party are
- KwaZulu-Natal: Sizwe Emmanuel Mbhele in Ward 10 in the Indaka [Waaihoek] Municipality – KZN233. The seat was retained by the party with 47.06% of the 4 113 votes cast. Voter turnout was 53.56%.
- KwaZulu-Natal: Nestar Bukwani Namana in Ward 15 in the Abaqulusi [Vryheid] Municipality – KZN263. The seat was retained by the party with 50.40% of the 3 917 votes cast. Voter turnout was 50.88%.
