KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu public engagements: “Our journey of building a stronger province is continuing.”
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu will appear before the Public Accounts Standing Committee (Scopa) in the provincial legislature today at 9h00. Scopa has scheduled a series of follow-up hearings into the Auditor General reports for the financial year 2014/15.
Mchunu remarked: “As the former Speaker myself, I respect the role of parliament of exercising oversight over the executive. The people of this province deserve a responsible and accountable government. This is something we will continue to do ceaselessly as we seek to build a new image of this government and restore its credibility.”
Hearings is taking place at the ANC Caucus Room at 9h00 today 31 May 2016.
Management Meetings
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu will meet the senior management of the Department of Transport and the Department of Community Safety and Liaison respectively. Meetings are taking place in Pietermaritzburg between 10h00 and 12h00.
Mchunu remarked: “I want to pay tribute to all categories of staff in the Department of Transport for the hard work over the years. They have been very instrumental in ensuring road upgrades which have become a catalyst for the movements of people and goods. Bridges have been built in areas previously hard to access, making it easier for children who previously had to skip school on rainy days to be able to attend school even in inclement weather.”
“Equally, I want to appreciate the commitment of all categories of staff in the Department of Community Safety and Liaison. They have been at the forefront of all efforts aimed at ensuring peace and stability in the province. Importantly, when we launched the United Front Against Crime during the previous term of office, they showed dedication to ensure that we make an impact on the ground.
They successfully mobilised communities to work with law enforcement agencies because my understanding is that police alone cannot deal with criminals unless if there are people in the community who can work with police to make it possible for criminals to commit crime.”
Freedom Flame celebrating 16 Years of Local Government
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu will today hand-over the Freedom Flame to the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Cyril Xaba who is the Champion of Sukuma Sakhe in Umzinyathi District. The event will take place at between 16h00 and 21h00 at Battle Field Country Lodge.
Mchunu remarked: The major symbol of our celebration of 16 years of local government is 16 years of Freedom Flame. The Freedom Flame symbolises the dawn of freedom; after centuries of dark days of apartheid colonialism characterised by subjugation, discrimination and suppression of the majority. For the first time in 1994, human value and availability of services was never determined by the colour of the skin.”
The Freedom Flame will criss-cross the 11 districts highlighting the light over darkness that has prevailed in various municipalities over the past 16 years.
Media is invited to attend some of the activities and to RSVP with Regi Khumalo on 079 751 6108.
