Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana host South African Public Broadcaster’s Policy Review Colloquium, 6 to 7 Sept

Government through the Department of Communications (DoC) led by Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and the Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana, will  host the South African Public Broadcasting Policy Review Colloquium. The colloquium will take place at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand in Johannesburg on the 06 and 07 September 2018 under the theme: “Building a resilient public broadcaster”.

The Colloquium will bring together various international and national policy experts and role players on public broadcasting to shed light on cutting-edge challenges such as the demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution, collaborative opportunities and strategies to reshape the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) of the future.

In addition the colloquium will take a long term review of the SABC mandate to ensure that it responds to the global trends towards online and on-demand services, and non-linear digital services.

“Government calls on members of the public, all active role players of the broadcasting industry and stakeholders to play an active role in these important process and help create a new vision for public broadcasting.

“Members of the public and the industry role players who have actively participated in these important processes to shape the public broadcaster that will continue to meet needs and interest of the public are urged to attend the colloquium”, said Minister Mokonyane.

The written submissions that were received on the review of the National Public Broadcasting Service which ends on 31 August 2018 and the outcomes of the two days colloquium will form part of the finalisation of the Public Broadcasting Policy Review.

1. Appropriate funding model for the SABC In the digital  multichannel environment;
2. The mandate of the SABC and its role in servicing unfunded public mandate in a commercial environment;
3. Governance and accountability at the SABC now and SABC of the future; and
4. The ideal policy and regulatory environment for the SABC in the digital multichannel environment.
