KwaZulu-Natal Treasury celebrates Mandela Day in Molweni

Provincial treasury brings a smile to children in Molweni

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Treasury team exchanged their swanky daily office clothes with overalls to celebrate the Mandela Day by getting their hands dirty in Molweni in eThekwini Municipality today.

Lead by the Head of Department, Mr Simiso Magagula, a team of departmental officials and volunteers from the area descended on Asiphile Early Childhood Development Centre with food, blankets, mattresses, toys, furniture for the children.

Armed with a roller brush and a bucket of paint, HoD Magagula painted the 4x8 metre wooden structure that houses 45 children in kwaMageza Village. He went to the garden of the crèche and planted a bed of seedlings to promote growing fresh vegetables for the children's meals.

Magagula also donated money boxes to the crèche to teach children to save money. He emphasised the importance of teaching children to save at an early age.

"We must instil the culture of saving in our children early so that they will grow up with a solid foundation to on saving. We want to create a future generation of savers. This is necessary if we are to improve the economy of this province and South Africa. Besides, saving is the solid foundation from which to grow our economy," he said.

He said Mandela was a champion for goodwill, and people should follow his footsteps by extending their loving hearts to build a better future.

Early in the day, Magagula visited the Comfort Zone Crèche in Ward 103 (kwaNyuswa) where he also donated food, toys, mattresses and blankets to children.

Founder of Asiphile ECD Centre, Ms Nonsikelelo Gwamanda, said the donations would go a long way to improve the lives of children at the centre.

"Our crèches in this area are in great need for development. Today's event gives us hope that government is listening to our call for development. We want a government that respond to our needs," she said.

Gwamanda's counterpart in Comfort Zone, Ms Sibongile Zondi, said there are many other crèches in the area that needed help. "This donation reduces our burden and improves the conditions underwhich our children learn."

Mandela Day is observed every year on the 18th of July where each Member of the Executive, in terms of government, is expected to spend 67 minutes helping to build or plough back to communities and this is done in recognition of the number of years (67) that Dr Nelson Mandela spent fighting for the betterment of the lives of the people of South Africa and throughout the world.

Magagula told people that Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
