Real Men Don’t Rape - provincial march against gender based violence
“Real men must stand up and defend the most vulnerable members of society – women and children. We must not stand by and watch this terrible scourge tear apart the fabric of our communities and society.”
That’s according to KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu who will lead a march against gender based violence. The march is scheduled to take place tomorrow 14 July in Durban, starting from King Dinizulu Park at 9h00 and finishes at Gugu Dlamini Park near the Workshop Shopping Mall.
More than 10 000 people including members of the executive council and leaders of society from across the province are expected to attend this march to display a public disapproval of the abuse of women and children.
Mchunu remarked: “Statistics for 2016/2017 as supplied by the Department of Health indicate that nationally, about 55 000 cases of sexual assault were reported with about 11 466 being from KwaZulu-Natal.”
“EThekwini district has recorded between 2016/1017 about 4 227 or 37% cases of rape. The number of rape survivors given ART prophylaxis is about 4 582 or (40%).”
“The most devastating thing is that about 4 417 or 39% of cases involves rape survivors under the age of 12. As a right-thinking person you can’t stop asking the question: what type of person can stoop to the level of sexually assaulting a 12-year old teenager?”
Media is invited to attend and cover the event.
