Premier Sihle Zikalala delivers eulogy at funeral of Thandi Cecilia Memela, 16 Jan

Premier of KwaZulu Natal Sihle Zikalala to deliver the eulogy at the Special Provincial Official Funeral of late Stalwart and MP Thandi Cecilia Memela

Premier of KwaZulu Natal Mr Sihle Zikalala has expressed the province’s gratitude to President Cyril Ramaphosa for honouring ANC veteran and MP Thandi Memela with a Special Official Provincial Funeral. Ms Thandi Cecilia Memela sadly passed away on the 07th of January 2021 following a short illness. The veteran MP will be laid to rest on Saturday the 16th of January 2021 following a service to be held at the Chesterville Community Hall, in Durban.

Premier Zikalala will deliver the eulogy during the funeral.

“On behalf of government and the ANC, we wish to pay tribute to the late ANC Stalwart and Member of Parliament Ms Thandi Cecelia Memela for her lifetime dedication to the struggle and by extension the people of this country. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mama Thandi and wish to convey our sincerest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues,” said Premier Zikalala.

“We are very grateful that President Cyril Ramaphosa has seen it fit to honour this gallant and tireless servant of the people of South Africa by granting Mama Thandi a Special Official Provincial Funeral. Through this honour, the President on behalf of our entire government, recognises the lifetime of sacrifice and the valuable contribution made by Mama Thandi to the struggle for liberation and to the building of a peaceful, equal, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.”

Mama Memela will be laid to rest in Chesterville on Saturday 16th of January 2021 after a service to be held at the Chesterville Community Hall.

Mama Memela was born on the 08th of January 1939 and passed away on the 07th of January 2021. She distinguished herself in the trenches of the liberation movement and from 2009 joined National Parliament and was later appointed Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.

In 2015 Mama Memela served as a Member of Pan African Parliament and was until her retirement in 2019, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Women in the Presidency. Mama Memela served as Chairperson of the ANC Veterans League and later became Deputy President of the ANC Veterans League. At the time of her passing Mama Memela was the KwaZulu Natal Treasurer of the ANC Veterans League.

Members of the public are reminded that under the Adjusted Alert Level 3 funerals are limited only to a maximum of 50 people.
