Premier Sihle Zikalala debates on 5G and myths linking cell-phone towers to Coronavirus COVID-19, 15 Jan

14 Jan 2021

The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Mr Sihle Zikalala has entered the raging debate linking Covid-19 to 5G towers, and will in this regard be hosting a Webinar on the subject.

The webinar continues engagements by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial with the public which will involve all forms of media including Social Media, Radio and Print platforms. This follows viral but ill-informed posts on Social media recently which were believed to be behind the vandalising of cell-phone towers in the EThekwini area by people who allege that these are a danger to their health.

The destruction of these towers has caused damage worth millions of rand and which if left unattended, may hurt investor confidence. Premier Zikalala has condemned these as acts of sabotage and the work of a criminal fringe which should be prosecuted and sentenced accordingly.

At the same time, the Premier recognises the need to engage the residents of KwaZulu-Natal on the province’s digital strategy, the significance of the Fourth Industrial Revolution for socio-economic growth and myths around 5G.

Premier Zikalala has described the Fourth Industrial Revolution as being characterised by new technologies in fields like robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, quantum computing, biotechnology, The Internet of Things (IoT), decentralized consensus, 3D printing and autonomous vehicles.

Importantly, the KZN government regards technological innovation as critical in speeding economic growth and leap-frogging stages of development. Harnessed properly, telecommunication infrastructure, broadband networks and digital innovation can make KwaZulu-Natal a leader in Africa and the world.

The event will also be addressed by subject experts on Telecommunications and Health.

It will be conducted in a hybrid format. Links will be provided for members of the public who will join the conversation remotely and on our digital platforms.

Members of the Media are invited to be part of this Webinar on “The Truth about 5G” to be held as follows:

Date: Friday, 15 January 2021
Venue: Archie Gumede Conference Centre, Public Works Mayville and Via Link
Time: 17h00
