As at 1pm on 28 July 2021, the Western Cape had 34 324 active COVID-19 infections, with a total number 392 386 COVID-19 cases to date and 343 262 recoveries.

By 5pm on 27 July 2021, the Western Cape Government had administered a cumulative total of 1 037 251 vaccines to healthcare workers, staff in the education sector and those within eligible age brackets.
The current 7-day moving average is 90 deaths per day.

Premier Winde calls on residents to protect loved ones as active cases continue to increase
I call on residents to continue practicing the lifesaving behaviours that we have learnt over the past year to protect our loved ones, particularly those who are at high-risk.
Especially now, as we experience the pressure created by our third wave peak, we need to ensure we don’t spread or get infected by COVID-19.
Please:
- Wear your mask properly, covering your nose and mouth.
- Wash and sanitise your hands regularly.
- Avoid crowded places, confined spaces and close contact.
- Keep your gatherings short, small and outdoors – with lots of ventilation.
- Drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.
- Get vaccinated when it is your turn.
- Stay home if you feel sick. If you have any difficulty breathing, seek urgent medical treatment.
- Help protect those at highest risk – especially those who are older, and those with comorbidities.
- Continue to protect your own family bubble.
Let’s play our part in breaking the chain of transmission so that we can protect those closest to us.
Demand exceeding vaccine supplies
The Western Cape did not receive the quantity of vaccines needed this week to meet the significant demand that exists in the province.
The fact that there is such enthusiasm to get vaccinated is great news, but we understand it is also very frustrating when it is not possible to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
The fact that the demand is far outstripping our current supplies means that we are experiencing pressures at some of our sites. We please ask for your patience and understanding.
Those frontline heroes managing our vaccine sites are working extremely hard to provide you an excellent vaccine service, despite these challenges that are out of their control.
As a province, we must ensure that there are adequate supplies for the second doses of those residents who received their vaccine 6 weeks ago, while also keeping the appointments of those residents who have been scheduled. We therefore encourage you to wait for your appointment, especially during this time that pressure is being experienced in the system.
We will continue to engage the national government with the aim of getting more vaccine supplies so that we can match the notable demand that exists for vaccinations in the Western Cape.
