Premier Winde conducts site visit to Brackengate Hospital of Hope

I had the opportunity to see our COVID-19 response firsthand this afternoon when I undertook an oversight visit to the Brackengate Intermediate Care Facility or ‘Brackengate Hospital of Hope’. I was welcomed to the facility by Acting CEO, Dr Kevin Stoffberg.

This intermediate care facility is well equipped to respond to increased admissions and currently has:

  • 336 beds;
  • 13 operational high flow nasal oxygen units; and
  • Based on a 5-day average – it uses 291.83 litres of oxygen a minute and has capacity for 14 417 litres a minute while storing an impressive 43 400 000 litres on site.

As of 1 July:

  • 121 total patients were admitted;
  • 17 admission were in the last 24 hours;
  • 28 discharges were in the last 24 hours;
  • 2 deaths were in the last 24 hours; and
  • 2 in were admitted to high flow nasal oxygen units.

In the Western Cape, the total general bed use rate is at 82%, the total COVID-19 bed use rate is at 30%, and the total designated COVID-19 critical care bed use rate is at 76%.

Insofar as our drainage areas are concerned:

  • The Metro has 5041 beds, of which the general bed use rate is 89%, the COVID-19 bed use rate is 28%;
  • The George drainage area has 918 beds, of which the general bed use rate is 64%, the COVID-19 bed use rate is 25%;
  • The Paarl drainage area has 987 beds, of which the general bed use rate is 73%; the COVID-19 bed use rate is 49%; and
  • The Worcester drainage area has 769 beds, of which the general bed use rate is 65%, the COVID-19 bed use rate is 25%.

During the visit, the staff made a special call to residents to please support them when serving on the frontline by adhering to the necessary precautions and preventing transmission.

They further requested assistance collecting clothes for patients who were being discharged. My office will be facilitating a donation drive for clothes for the hospital to help.

I want to thank the brave women and men serving on the frontline.  We are truly indebted to you, our doctors and nurses, and we must do whatever we can to support you in your important work.
