Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries notes Public Protector’s report on outbreak of brucellosis on farm

Public Protector’s report on an investigation into allegations of maladministration by the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), and the Department Of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) relating to its handling of an outbreak of brucellosis (contagious abortion) on the farm of Mrs Ronel Behrens: Report 44 of 2018/19

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has taken note of the report from the Public Protector entitled “Public Protector’s Report on an Investigation into Allegations of Maladministration by the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) Relating to its Handling of an Outbreak Of Brucellosis (Contagious Abortion) on the Farm of Mrs Ronel Behrens: Report 44 of 2018/19”.

While the DAFF respects the constitutional role of office of the Public Protector, it is concerned about certain of the findings and recommendations made. DAFF has therefore sought legal advice on the contents of the report. Based on the advice received, the DAFF has instructed a legal team to prepare an application to review the findings and recommendation of the Public Protector. In view hereof, the DAFF is not in a position to comment further at this stage.”
