Minister Mchunu to recognise extra- ordinary public servants whose work go beyond the call of duty
Minister for Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu will on Friday 30, October 2020, confer certificates of gratitude to honour selfless and dedicated public servants, at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg in Ekurhuleni.
Government has taken an initiative to intensify the re-orientation of Batho Pele- the notion of putting people first- in all three spheres of the public service. The appreciation of excellence in service delivery and recognising the contribution by public servants across Government is one of the means to instill a sense of achievement and belonging to public servants, as it pursues its drive towards the creation of a strong capable and ethical Public Service.
It is important to note that this year’s National Batho Pele Excellence Awards are held through the support from the DPSA’s social partners as reinforcement of the message of appreciating the role played by Public Servants.
The public service thrives towards a culture orientation which is aimed at fostering appropriate behavior, attitudes and work ethics through reinforcing the Batho Pele ethos. These ethos demand of the public servants to be citizens-service centric through visible demonstration of the work ethics and values espoused in the Constitution and the Public Service Charter.
Amid the ongoing devastating COVID-19 pandemic, brave public servants continued to demonstrate the spirit of Batho Pele and rolled their sleeves to save and protect citizens selflessly, putting their lives at risk with some losing their lives in the process.
The theme for the event: “Growing South Africa together for a capable and ethical Public Service”, is a reaffirmation of government’s position of putting citizens in the forefront of service delivery improvement initiatives and its resolve to strengthen efforts to tackle the continued unethical conduct, service delivery gaps and unevenness in delivering services to the people.
“These accolades continue to inculcate and institutionalise a culture of servitude, characterised by a sense of belonging, caring when serving citizens. They represent a serious and committed move by the Government towards transforming and professionalising the Public Service, improving service delivery as well as putting into operation some of the building blocks towards the realisation of a capable and developmental state in line with the National Development Plan (NDP).” The NDP complements the constitutional imperative to create a public administration that is professional, ethical, responsive, capable and responsible to the needs of citizens,” says Minister Mchunu.

- Best Operational Employee of the Year (L4-12) – looking at leadership qualities and abilities
- Best Batho Pele Team of the Year
- Best Implemented Project of the Year
- Outstanding Batho Pele Winner of the Year
- Life Time Achievers
