The MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal, Sihle Zikalala, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of people who died in a tragic incident at a military facility in Durban today.
Six people, including three members of the South African Defence Force (SANDF) and three Public Works Department contract workers were killed and more than 20 hospitalised after they allegedly came into contact with toxic gas fumes from a sewer pit.
It is believed that the three soldiers had rushed to the pit to try to assist workers who were struggling to breathe underground.
“We are extremely saddened to hear about the tragic incident which happened at the same time as we were preparing for the big Armed Forces event. We wish to offer our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the bereaved families and friends on this tragic and untimely loss of lives.
The government has lost dedicated public servants who met their untimely end while in the service of our people.
Their families can recall their memories with love and pride. We also wish those hospitalised a speedy recovery,” Zikalala said.
The tragic incident happened as thousands of soldiers and civilians have descended on Durban to take part in a series of activities organised to commemorate the SANDF's Armed Forces Day which also marks the centenary of the historic sinking of the SS Mendi vessel.
The main event, which will be attended by thousands of people, will take place on Tuesday and will be attended by President Jacob Zuma.
