MEC Belinda Scott celebrates Nelson Mandela Day with community of Molweni

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance, Mrs Belinda Scott, had her hands full today celebrating  Nelson Mandela Day.

MEC Scott started her day at Molweni Zimele Centre, which caters for 65 children living with disabilities, where she joined Ward 9 Councillor, Simphiwe Mncube and a group of local volunteers with cutting of grass and cleaning the yard to make the centre a healthy and habitable institution.

MEC Scott also took a tour around the centre to identify a number of items which required intervention. She pledged to buy mattresses and blankets for children, and install railings for people who use wheel chairs.

"This centre is an important institution that takes care of our children. It is one of the centres that has fallen through the cracks. We need to support it. I will return here soon with the departments of education, social development, health and agriculture to see what we can do to assist these children. They are not getting formal education and there is more that government needs to do to assist these children," said MEC Scott.

As if that was not enough, Councillor Mncube took Scott to a Mdima family where there are seven needy children who do not have parents. A private company, Great Impact, pledged to build a house for this family.

Mncube will liaise with local traditional leadership to get a suitable plot on which to build a house for the family.

I am humbled by the leadership that is selfless, humble, giving and inspirational. Tata Nelson Mandela is an embodiment of that. I will do all within me to follow the footsteps of Madiba. I want to see the people of this ward and beyond harvesting the fruits of our freedom in my lifetime. If I am the vehicle to deliver that, so be it," said Mncube.

Mncube and Scott continued their community visit to Khanyisani Primary School where they cleaned the yard and planted trees.
