The Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko has added her voice in mourning the passing of South African football legend Phil Masinga.

The MEC has extended her heartfelt condolences to the Masinga family, remembering the star as having contributed greatly in raising the profile of South African football.

We are mourning one of the rare talents that contributed to taking South African soccer to greater heights following its re-entry into international stage, by winning the 1996 Africa Nations Cup”.

“His goal that qualified the country to its first World Cup in 1998 will forever be embedded in the hearts and minds of many soccer loving South Africans.

“Together with the likes of Lucas Radebe, Shoes Moshoeu, Pitso Mosimane, Augustine Makalakalane and many others from the triumphant class of 1996, were amongst the first talents to be exported post democracy.

“His passing will surely reignite and influence the narrative on the standard and progress of South African football from which we hope it(football) will gaint.

“On behalf of the Home of Champions people of Gauteng we would like to we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and entire sporting fraternity. In mourning his passing, we must not forget to celebrate his life, talent and achievements he shared with us. May his soul rest in eternal peace”.
