MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi celebrates Mandela Month in Khayalethu Old Age Home

MEC Mosenogi extends her 67 minutes to disability and elderly homes

In closing the Mandela month, the MEC for Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism Mme Kenetswe Mosenogi led a successful cleaning and handing over of clothes, beds, linen, blankets, toiletries and monetary donations from staff members for groceries to Khayalethu Old Age Home and We Can Home for the Disabled Centres based in Potchefstroomand Klerksdorp respectively.

The handing over was held under the theme “Be the legacy” with significance of encouraging individuals, businesses and civil society organisations to roll up sleeves and do good to the local communities.

Speaking during the handing over, MEC Mosenogi described the Nelson Mandela Day as an extremely important day for all South Africans as it reminds us of our global icon and all the good deeds he has done towards building a better South Africa. Mosenogi told attendees that Tata Nelson Mandela during his lifetime inspired all of with his numerous acts of generosity.

“His legacy should not die, and it is upon us to work together in ensuring that it multiply for generations to come and continue to be the pillars of our society,” denoted MEC Mosenogi.

The MEC was joined by Member of the National Assembly Mme Nombuyiselo Adoons, both departmental Heads of Department; Mr Lufuno Tshikovhi and Advocate Neo Sephoti, and departmental agencies North West Gambling Board, North West Development Corporation and North West Parks Board.

"I am hoping that with the little contribution that we have made today as staff of the department and the agencies will give hope and inspiration to other community members to lend a helping hand towards the centres such as these two,” said the MEC.

The centres are both Non-profit organisations which render Social Welfare Services to elderly people, middle aged people, disabled children and destitute people. They provide the victims with access to shelter, provision of nutritious food, emotional support and other essential services in order to ensure the physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being of fellow citizens.

Project Manager of Khayalethu Old Aged Home, Ms Lilly Bontsi expressed her gratitude to the department and its stakeholders for assisting their centre. Mama Lilly as she is affectionately known said she founded the centre in 2014 after having worked for 20 years at an old age home. According to Mama Lilly, she decided to open the centre to be able to make a difference in the lives of the neglected elders within her locality.

We Can Home for disabled founded by Ms. Mazibuko who has 22 years of teaching experience and provide homage to 40 children with disability. Ms Mazibuko was motivated by her passion and experience in community upliftment programmes to start the centre.  She could not hide her joy when she thanked the Department and its stakeholders for their donations as together with the caregivers will be able to assist the children with basic necessities that will bring positive impact and conducive environment for the children who came as far as Ganyesa, Kuruman, Krugerdorp and Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and Haartebeesfontein (KOSH) areas.

The MEC relayed her gratitude to the department and agencies staff members for their hardwork and contributions as well as Protea Hotel Klerksdorp for the donations made.
