MEC Dlungwana to hand over special needs school buses
The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthandeni Dlungwana, is going to officially hand over buses for learners with special needs at H.S. Ibrahim Special School, tomorrow, 28 July 2017.
These buses are given to Special Schools because some of the learners are physically disabled, blind or partially sighted and intellectually disabled, which makes it difficult for these learners to use ordinary public transports.
The department procured 63 buses at the end of 2009 and they were delivered to Special Schools in 2010. Out of the 63 buses, 35 were adapted to accommodate learners who were physically disabled. In 2013, further 20 buses were procured and delivered to deserving Special Schools. In total, the department has provided 103 buses to 71 special schools in the province.
The department intends to further provide other 20 buses in the 2018/19 financial year as the number of learners in Special Schools continue to increase every year.
The department will dedicate the handover of these buses to reflect, acknowledge progress and the development in the provision of learner transport as one of the pillars in the implementation of Inclusive Education White Paper 6. This is one of the ways to increase access to quality education for Learners with Special Education Needs.
“The department is committed to ensuring that Learners with Special Education Needs are well catered for. We want to ensure that each Special School has at least one bus. More buses will be procured incrementally over the years. We are doing this in keeping with the dictates of the Freedom Charter, which enjoins us to open the doors of learning to everyone,” said MEC Dlungwana.
