MEC Belinda Scott on Operation Sukuma Sakhe War Rooms

MEC Belinda Scott calls for hands on deck in Umgungundlovu Schools

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance Belinda Scott has called on all stakeholders in Howick to participate in Operation Sukuma Sakhe War Rooms to fight social ills.

MEC Scott, the Political Champion of uMgungundlovu District, made the passionate plea today (14 January 2016) during the visit of the Legislature's School Opening Functionality Monitoring Programme delegation at Mpophomeni and Howick schools.

The delegation heard that learning and teaching at some of the schools were affected  by gangsterism, drugs, vandalism of property, ill-discipline, lack of security, and other social ills.

Scott said: "We need all stakeholders to participate in Operation Sukuma Sakhe War Rooms so that they will make inputs to deal with social ills.

"Government departments should play their part to fight social ills. We need reports from SAPS, departments of health and social development detailing what interventions they have made to deal with social ills," said MEC.

She was happy that learning and teaching was underway and encouraged teachers to do their best to improve results at school. Acknowledging challenges raised during the visit, she said "we need to come up with solutions to these challenge".

Leader of the Legislature delegation, Mthandeni Dlungwane was upbeat that the visit would yield positive results.

Dlungwane said the visit that started in Imbali Township yesterday (13 January 2016) would continue to do its monitoring work and deal with challenges faced by schools in the district.

"We are happy about the progress made so far and are optimistic that we will come up with solutions to ensure that learning and teaching at schools is smooth," he said.

The delegation visited Asibemunye High School at Mpophomeni Township and Injoloba High School in Howick, respectively. Injoloba achieved 84% pass rate in 2015.
