MEC Albert Fritz commemorates Nelson Mandela Day with Haven Night Shelters

Mandela Day: Minister Fritz joins charity drive by celebrity Chef, Jenny Morris

The Western Cape Social Development MEC, Albert Fritz, commemorated Mandela Day by joining celebrity Chef, Jenny Morris for the soup kitchen charity drive.

MEC joined well over 2000 volunteers in chopping vegetables and kneading dough, to make hot soup and fresh bread, to be donated to shelters across Cape Town and to the homeless.

Jenny Morris was also raising funds for various charities and shelters through a muffin sale. Each muffin, sold at R20, would provide a warm bed and meal at The Haven Night Shelters for two homeless people.

The public or corporates still looking to support this initiative can still do so by ordering muffins or purchasing “virtual muffins”, by contacting JennyM@GigglingGourmet.com.

The Haven Night Shelter is part of a growing network of 24 shelters supported and funded by the Department through our Families Programme. Shelter services receive an annual budget of R47.6-million which assists shelters to play a critical role in helping the Department and municipalities render critically needed interventions to the homeless, such as;

  • social work assistance,
  • family reintegration,
  • and a referral pathway for substance abuse treatment

The department commends Chef Jenny for this wonderful initiative, and we call on the public and corporates to support the fund-raising charity-drive.
