Government Communications on local government elections

Local government elections proceeding well

The Local Government Elections are proceeding well and South Africans are turning out in their numbers to make their voices heard at the polls.  These Local Government Elections provide an opportunity for all eligible South Africans to participate in strengthening our democracy.

Donald Liphoko, GCIS Acting Director-General said; “It is encouraging to see our democracy at work with people both young and old, braving the cold weather in some parts of the country, to vote for their preferred candidates.  Voting is a right and responsibility for all South African citizens.”

South Africans are advised against taking pictures inside the voting booths. “Let us be responsible and refrain from taking pictures of marked ballot papers. The rules of the IEC prohibit this as it compromises the secrecy of the ballots, “said Liphoko.

Government has created an enabling environment for this important election with law enforcement presence on the ground to ensure a free, fair and safe election.

“Citizens who have not collected their IDs are urged to collect their documents so that they can cast their votes. The Department of Home Affairs will be open until 7pm, the same hours as the IEC voting stations.” said Liphoko.

Government encourages the public not to leave their voting to the very last minute.  Liphoko said, “Go out and vote, your future is in your hands”.
