Limpopo Province ready for safe, free and fair Local Government Elections
It is all systems go for the province to hold safe, secure, free and fair elections for the people of Limpopo. As Government, we would like to encourage the people of Limpopo in particular Vuwani and Vhembe as a whole to go out in numbers and exercise their democratic rights by voting for their preferred party without fear.
Government has deployed members of the South African Police Service all over the Province, including areas of Vuwani where violent protests erupted in the past. This will ensure that we have free and secure local government elections and no one will be deprived of their democratic right to vote.
Preparations are on track for the 2016 Local Government Elections from 1 - 3 August 2016, where all eligible members of the community will exercise their democratic right and cast their vote for the party and candidate of their choice. We edge all eligible voters to go out in their numbers to cast their vote without fear, while pleading with political parties and candidates to be tolerant.
Government has since established a Provincial JOC on Local Government Elections comprising of all Security Clusters, SAPS, Defence, IEC, SALGA, all Stakeholder departments. Provincial JOC is combat ready to deal with any incident that may occur during these elections. The Team will not shy away from engaging the law enforcement agencies and recommending corrective measures should the need arise.
To ensure peaceful elections, stakeholders and the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Vuwani signed the peace agreement to restore normalcy throughout Vhembe District. The agreement was signed on the 28 July 2016; therefore all communities including Vuwani are ready for the coming elections.
As part of the preparations, the IEC and Limpopo Provincial Government launched the Result Operational Centre in Peter Mokaba later that day. The Premier and his Members of Executive Council (MECs), and Executive Mayors from District Municipalities will lead by example to cast their votes in different voting stations as listed below:
