Premier Willies Mchunu prioritises service delivery

KwaZulu-Natal Government to maintain solid service delivery despite an impasse in two municipalities

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Premier’s Co-ordinating Forum (PCF) has assured the people of KwaZulu-Natal that government will continue to ensure solid service delivery across the province.

After the sitting of Government and Administration Cluster today, the Premier remarked:

“We support the approach of the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa-Dube of seeking legal guidance on how to resolve the stalemate on the formation of councils of Nquthu and Jozini municipalities.”

“While legal processes are underway, we are determined to ensure that we provide service to those voted on the 3rd August 2016. We have an obligation to use government resources to alleviate the sufferings of ordinary members of society irrespective of political affiliation.”

“In liaison with the MEC for COGTA I will set up a meeting with all Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Speakers and Municipal Managers to discuss matters of good governance. I am constitutionally bound to convene this forum in line with Chapter 6 of the Constitution of the Republic.”

“As government we need a strong leadership that will ensure that local government remains the centre of popular democratic participation in the delivery of services to all our people. We take comfort in progress we have made in building this sphere of government in a manner that is responsive to the needs of the people. The journey to ultimate development is still long. That is why it requires bold leadership that stands for honest service to the people.”  

“We are committed to promoting a culture of co-existence amongst different political parties. To this end, we have tasked the MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda to promote political tolerance through the Multi-Party-Intervention Committee with a special focus in hung municipalities.”

“We plead for claim in these municipalities and we want to assure communities in that a solution will be found soon. In addition, we want all elected public representatives to understand that the important role of local government in promoting economic growth and job creation.”

“As guided by the Provincial Growth and Development Plan, we want municipalities to be proactive in giving effect to national and provincial government programmes, particularly in promoting sectors of the economy that drives economic growth.”
