KwaZulu-Natal Treasury on 2017/18 provincial budget

KZN Treasury discusses budget with Kwamthandi community in Ladysmith

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Treasury’s Budget outreach has today reached the community of KwaMathandi, ward 20, under Alfred Duma Municipality in Ladysmith today.

Communities raised various development issues in the area for Treasury to consider when putting together the final provincial budget for 2017/18.

Smangele Mbatha, 64, aid their community does not have a high school and this results in them having to spend a lot of money for their children to travel to other towns and wards that have high schools.

“We still need more from the government. Our mud-house crèches are not registered under Social Development and we need financial support to build proper ones and register them. Many people still do not have low-cost houses,” she said.

Some of the issues raised include the need for road signs, skills development, killing of livestock by passing vehicles due to lack of fencing as well as job creation.

Thulile Hadebe, deputy mayor of Alfred Duma Municipality said the housing programme is still underway and they were aware that some people have not received houses.

“We are rolling out massive development in KwaMthandi area and other areas. We are rolling out a road infrastructure programme worth R100 million. We have built a massive community hall and there is more that we are in the process of doing in this area,” said Hadebe.

Speaking on the budget campaign, Provincial Budget Analyst from KZN Treasury, Sibonelo Mazibuko, said this campaign is going places.

“WE have been to Hammarsdale, Izingolweni and now here. We are still planning to reach out to other communites. The objective is to engage communities on their budget needs and get input from them which will be considered during the government’s budget process,” he said.
