MEC Belinda Scott on Isixaxa Disabled Group

Isixaxa disabled group gets a much-needed boost from KZN financial literacy association to fight poverty

In a move to support disabled people, the KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association (KZNFLA) which is championed by the MEC for Finance, Belinda Scott, yesterday gave a much-needed injection to the work of Isixaxa Disabled Group so that they can continue to benefit themselves and other disabled people in KwaMachi area, Harding.

The Association paid a visit Isixaxa, based in eMbangweni area in ward 5 with the objective of eliminating poverty by donating three sewing machines and detergent chemicals.

Isixaxa was formed in 2006 and is made up of 10 disabled members, Lindani Mkane who is the Treasurer said “Isixaxa was formed so that disabled people could keep themselves occupied and make use of their hands. The challenge is that some other disabled members don’t earn grants, which makes life difficult.

We provide various services such as shoe repairs, sewing of traditional attires and we provide detergents. We don’t only benefit ourselves as disabled members of the group, but also the members of the community who have disabled children.

Area councilor, Councillor Phumzile Nkomo expressed her gratitude to KZNFLA Trust and KZN Provincial Treasury for their visit and she encouraged the members of Isixaxa to work diligently to improve themselves and other disabled people in the community.

Chairperson of KZNFLA, Artwell Hlengwa said their objective is to assist everyone to improve their knowledge of finances and how they can improve themselves.

“Isixaxa Diasbled Group is one of the organizations that were visited by the MEC for Finance, Belinda Scott, during her outreach in Harding in January. It then became clear that this registered Non-Profit Organisation can improve their business skills and management if we can get closer to them.

It is not always common for disabled people to come together and form an organised and registered structure like Isixaxa has done. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with them so that we can help them improve, and in turn help other disabled people in the area,” said Hlengwa.
