Deputy Minister Buti Manamela addresses installation of University of Mpumalanga Chancellor, 30 Nov

Deputy Minister to speak at installation of University of Mpumalanga Chancellor

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Mr Buti Manamela, will give a congratulatory message at the installation of the Chancellor of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) on Tuesday, 30 November 2021.

The President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, Justice Mandisa Maya, was appointed Chancellor by the UMP Council in July this year.  She is the second Chancellor of UMP, taking over from President Ramaphosa.

Justice Mandisa Maya is the first woman President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and is a candidate for the position of South Africa's Chief Justice.

Her contribution to the country's democratic institutions and jurisprudence dates from 1994, when she served as a case investigator for the Independent Electoral Commission during South Africa's first democratic elections. She practised as an advocate from 1994 until her appointment as an acting judge in 1999.

The role of a university chancellor is to reflect a university's values and stature.  A chancellor has no executive powers.
