Electoral Commission on weekend voter registration progress for 6 March

With just a few hours remaining for this weekend’s voter registration, the Electoral Commission is urging all eligible voters to make every effort to visit their voting station before they close at 5pm today.

While voter registration will still be possible during office hours at local IEC offices in each municipality until the Municipal Elections are proclaimed, this weekend’s registration is the most convenient and accessible way for voters to register at their local voting stations.

The Electoral Commission assures voters that anyone who visits a voting station before 5pm will be assisted and anyone waiting to be assisted at 5pm will be helped before our staff close the station.

Initial estimates for registration activities yesterday showed that approximately 1 million people visited voting stations yesterday to register, update their registration details and re-register at new and changed voting districts.

The Electoral Commission is pleased to report that almost all voting stations were open today with fewer than 20 voting stations out of the country’s 22 569 voting stations still experiencing glitches which were being attended to as at midday today.

Many of the voting stations which were closed yesterday due to community activism were able to open today thanks to the intervention of various stakeholders including the security forces, community leaders and civil society groups which assisted the Electoral Commission.

The Electoral Commission expresses its gratitude to all those who helped resume registration activities in these areas.

The Electoral Commission is also especially grateful to all voters who have used the opportunity to register and update their details.

The Electoral Commission is continuing to engage with stakeholders in those areas where some voting stations were still experiencing challenges. These areas include Vuwani in Limpopo (where 8 voting stations out of 45 were still closed earlier today); voting stations in ward 60 in Ethikwini and two voting stations in Weenen in KwaZulu-Natal; voting two voting stations in Khayelitsha in the Western Cape; four voting stations in Thabankulu in the Eastern Cape and 2 in GaMothibi in the NorthWest.

There is no effort being spared in the quest to ensuring that voters are provided with the opportunity to register.

The Electoral Commission will this week review the activities from this weekend’s registration and the results of the registration weekend will be announced in the early part of the week.
