The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms. Barbara Thomson and the Director-General, Mrs. Nosipho Ngcaba, congratulate the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa, on receipt of an honorary doctorate from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
“On behalf of the employees of the Department, we would like to congratulate the Minister on receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Applied Sciences for her continued contribution and support in the field of humanities. This is a wonderful tribute to the Minister’s achievements by the VUT Honorary Degrees Committee,” said Deputy Minister Barbara Thomson.
Minister Molewa has worked tirelessly to place environmental matters at the forefront of the South African development agenda. The Minister is a champion of community needs, particularly of communities in rural areas, who are hardest hit by not only the effects of climate change but the scourge of illegal wildlife trade.
“Her contribution on behalf of South Africa to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, reached at the international climate change talks in France in December 2015, is immeasurable.
She has also worked solidly to ensure that the work of the Department is aligned with the National Development Plan, and address the quadruple challenges of poverty, unemployment, inequality and sustainability – social economic and environmental,” said Director-General, Mrs. Ngcaba.
“It is befitting that only days before Minister Molewa leads the South African delegation to the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP17), she is honoured for her dedication, commitment and fervor. For that we congratulate our esteemed Minister,” Ms Ngcaba said.
Minister Molewa was conferred the Honorary Doctorate during the VUT graduation ceremony on 6 September 2016.
