Happening at Parliament this week

This week President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the State of the Nation Address to the joint sitting of the National Assembly (NA) and National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

This will be the first State of the Nation Address of the sixth democratic Parliament. The Address is scheduled for Thursday 20 June 2019 at 19h00. Parliament's theme for the SONA is “Following up on our Commitments: Making Your Future Work Better”.

The President is expected to reflect on the country’s political, social and economic welfare, account to the nation on government’s work and further articulate the programme of action for the next five years.

Military rehearsals for the ceremony are scheduled for Tuesday, 18 and Wednesday 19 June.  Wednesday’s rehearsals take place from 17:30 to 20:00.  Cape Town road users are encouraged to look out for both radio and local newspaper advertisement announcing the temporary road closures and times. On 19 June, the Presiding Officers of Parliament will conduct a walk-about at the parliamentary precinct to make final assessment of Parliament's state of readiness for the crucial ceremony.

After the SONA, Parliament will converge again in a joint sitting of both Houses on 25 June to debate the content of the President’s Address and on 26 June for the reply of the President.
