Parliament activities for the week, 17 to 23 Feb

Happening at Parliament this week

Joint sittings of the two houses of Parliament, the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces debating the state of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 13 February, a reply to the debate by the President and seven committee meetings are on the agenda this week.

Following the State of the Nation Address last week, members of Parliament are provided with an opportunity to debate the address over two days to a joint sitting of both Houses. This will take place at 14h00 on Tuesday and Wednesday. The President will reply to this debate on Thursday on 20 February also starting at 14h00.

Committees are also scheduled to take place this week. These meetings are scheduled to consider a variety of issues, including consideration and adoption of draft minutes, briefings by government departments and its entities, other matters of public interest and quarterly and annual reports of government entities.

Tuesday:

Portfolio Committee on Basic Education: Consideration and adoption of draft minutes and reports; Briefing by the Department of Basic Education on the following referrals to the Portfolio Committee: Report of the SA Human Rights Commission on National Investigative Hearing into the Status of Mental Health Care in South Africa; Report of the SA Human Rights Commission on North West Provincial Investigative Hearing into Lack of Safety and Security Measures in Schools for Children with Disabilities in South Africa

Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture: Consideration and adoption of the First Term Draft Programme of the Committee; Briefing by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture on pending legislation and its objectives

Wednesday:

Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration: Briefing by the Department of Planning Monitoring and Evaluation and Brand South Africa on the second and third quarter performance of 2019/20 financial year; Briefing by the Statistics South Africa on the second and third quarter performance of 2019/20 financial year; Consideration and adoption of the previous Committee minutes;

Portfolio Committee on Police: Briefing by South African Police Service (SAPS) on Quarterly Reports and Report on Safe Festive Season;

Select Committee on Transport, Public Service and Administration, Public Works and Infrastructure: Briefing by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) on its Annual Report;

Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans: Military Discipline Bill (feedback and analysis on the public submissions;

Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure: Consideration and adoption of minutes. Consideration and adoption of the 2019/20 First and Second Quarter Report.
