Government activities for the week, 18 – 24 February

Government has scheduled the following briefings/activities for the week: 18 – 24 February 2019. The activities, which are aligned to the National Development Plan and outlined in the Medium Term Strategic Framework 2014-2019, are undertaken to build a better South Africa.

  • On Monday, 18 February, the National Treasury and Wits Journalism will hold a pre-budget workshop ahead of the Budget which Finance Minister Tito Mboweni will table in Parliament on Wednesday, 20 February in Parliament, Cape Town. The session is intended to give journalists a better working understanding of what the budget is and how it is put together. The session will be held at the Wits Journalism at 16h00.
  • The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Gugile Nkwinti, will on Monday, 18 February, officially launch the Mzimvubu Water Project advanced infrastructure 9, at Esiqhungqwini Village in the Eastern Cape.
  • From 18 to 22 February, the Department of Environmental Affairs will embark on a robust public awareness drive in an effort to urge South Africans to take a step towards protection and conservation of wetlands in the North West. The ultimate objective of the campaign is to heighten education and raise public awareness on the value of wetlands and their vital contribution to human wellness.
  • The National House of Traditional Leaders will be officially opened by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday, 19 February at the Old Assembly Chamber, in Cape Town at 14h00. On Thursday, 21 February, taking place in the Old Assembly Chamber, in Parliament, is the Annual Debate of the President’s speech.
  • The Minister of Energy, Mr Jeff Radabe, will on Tuesday, 19 February, deliver a keynote address at the 2019 Africa Energy Indaba Conference at Sandton, Conversion Centre at 09h00.
  • On Tuesday, 19 February, the Department of Labour under the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering directorate, will host a workshop on Driven Machinery Regulations in its Mpumalanga province. The workshop will bring together occupational health and safety inspectors, casino property owners, smelters, lifting machinery associations, lifting machinery entities, factories and lifting machinery training providers.
  • The Department of Tourism, will host a Best Practice Workshop under the theme, "Policy and Planning Strategies for addressing the challenges for Sustainable Tourism Development."  It brings together international tourism policy influencers and implementers to engage and exchange best tourism practices at Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani, Durban from 19 to 20 February. On Friday, 22 February, the Minister of Tourism, Mr Derek Hanekom, will officially launch and handover the Metsi Matsho Lodge funded by the Expanded Public Works Programme in Qwaqwa, Free State . On the same day, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ms Elizabeth Thabethe, will host a Tourism Resource Efficiency Training Programme graduation in Cape Town.
  • On Thursday, 21 February, the South African National Defence Force will celebrate the Armed Forces Day in Cape Town.
