Free State Health ready to handle any possible case of Typhoid Fever

The Free State Department of Health is aware of the recent reports of confirmed typhoid cases in the country, 7 in Gauteng and 3 in the Western Cape. Since the confirmation of these cases we checked our own backyard for any such cases and found none up to now in the Free State. The last cases we had were back in 2014.

Our Teams have been alerted and readied for deployment at any possible occurrence. Guidelines from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases were distributed electronically to assist facilities in recognising typhoid cases as well as its management thereof. There is ongoing surveillance in all the facilities as well as the laboratories.

The NHLS Laboratories have the capacity to diagnose the disease and to alert the responsible people (managing doctor, Communicable Disease or Infection Control Officers) for early reporting of confirmed typhoid cases. Teams will be available for contact tracing using the case investigation form for typhoid.
