Results of the Municipal By-elections held on 28 June 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape provinces. The Democratic Alliance (DA) retained four (4) seats;

while the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained three seats and lost one seat to the African National Congress (ANC). Furthermore, the ANC retained one seat and won another seat.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat.   

The new DA councillors are:

  • Andrew Lesch, in Ward 83, City of Tshwane Municipality – TSH Gauteng. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 72,02% of the total votes cast,

compared to 69,34% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 22,79%.

 

  • Allan Eugene Peterson, in Ward 11 EThekwini Municipality – ETH KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 57,11% of the total votes cast,

compared to 40.72% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25,91%.

 Elsie Wilhelmiena Vermooten, in Ward 14 Steve Tshwete Municipality – MP313- Mpumalanga. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 96,58% of the

total votes cast, compared to 79,79% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 27,46%.

 Jonathan Scott Mills, in Ward 107 City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT- Western Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 94,07% of the total votes cast,

compared to 82,36% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 21,39%.

The new IFP councillors are:

  • George Delane Khanyile, in Ward 05 iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN237, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 40,90% of the total votes

cast compared to 70,42% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 48,27%.

  • Sandile Buthelezi, in Ward 21 in iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality- KZN237, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat won it in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 55,72% of the total votes cast,

compared to 50,05% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 64,24%.

  • Bongani Nicholas Madondo, in Ward 29 Alfred Duma Municipality – KZN237- KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 52,79% of the total votes cast,

compared to 51,30% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61,75%.

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Saziso S'yabonga Shabalala, in Ward 14 iNkosi Langalibalele Municipality – KZN237, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won a seat previously held by the IFP after the 2021 Municipal Elections,

with 54,89% of the total votes cast, compared to 44,14% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56,09%.

  • Muzi Romeo Qedusizi Mhlanga, in Ward 12 Mkhondo Municipality – MP303- Mpumalanga. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 66,58% of the total votes cast,

compared to 61,74% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 37,06%.

The new PA councillor is:

  • Lois Cathleen Simonse, in Ward 07 City of Johannesburg – JHB- Gauteng. The party won a seat that was held by the African National Congress after the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 46,81% of the total votes cast,

compared to 37,55% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 33,86%.
